The most popular and largest of the three units that comprise Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the South Unit features a variety of ways to see the stark beauty of the Little Missouri River Badlands. Take a 36-mile loop drive through the park, where many pullouts and signs help visitors see and understand the unique features of the park. Many miles of trails provide options for both short, low-effort walks for families and multi-day hikes that require backcountry camping for seasoned adventurers. While in this unit of the park, make sure to visit the Maltese Cross Cabin, Roosevelt's residence when he was in the area working as a rancher. Canoeing and fishing are both possible along the river, though there are restrictions on both activities due to seasonal weather and the interests of wildlife preservation. For more information on the other units of the national park, the North Unit and the Elkhorn Site, visit their individual park pages offered on this site.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicles $10; Individuals $5.
